Name of woman being honored by the square.
Mary Kayser
Description of square.
My mother, Mary Kayser, was very dedicated to the people in her life, especially her family. They were her passion. My focus for designing the quilt square was to symbolically incorporate those relationships. I chose to do an embroidery piece in her honor because she often made lovely hand-stitched items and gave them as gifts to family members.
I began by embroidering the initial of her first name in the middle to the fabric square, encircled by an array of flowers that depict her beauty, sensitivity, and strength.
The two small wine colored flowers with leaves, which are situated to the right and to the left of the initial, represent her brother and sisters.
Above the initial is a garland of flowers that represents her marriage of many years to my father, Al.
Underneath the initial is a v-shaped linear pattern which represents her five children and the in-laws that grace our family.
Surrounding the initial are ten small hearts that represent her ten wonderful grandchildren.
The vibrant orange daisy swirl design at the bottom of the quilt square represents her lighthearted, fun-loving side – the side of her that loved to laugh and dance.
The border of lavender flowers represents the many friends, relatives, and acquaintances who were part of her life.
The butterfly represents the end of a journey and the beginning of new life, not only for my mother, but for all our deceased family members and loved ones.
Quilter contributing square and their relationship to the person being honored.
