Description of square.
This square is a combination of fabrics and motifs that represent my values, interests and hobbies.
What would you like to tell us about the woman being honored?
I was diagnosed with stage IIB ovarian cancer in June of 2000, at the age of 28. I am currently cancer-free, and look forward to remaining so. To tell you more about myself, here is more detail about the components of my square:
- In the corners is teal fabric, the awareness color for ovarian cancer, to represent how my life in many ways is now “framed” by my cancer experience.
- Also in each corner and around the middle square are images and words to represent my Christian faith. It encompasses and permeates everything else. God’s grace and strength saw me through my illness.
- The white roses in each corner symbolize marriage to my perfect partner, my husband Greg; I carried white roses in my bridal bouquet. This summer (2002) we will celebrate our sixth anniversary. I thank God every day for giving Greg to me.
- In the upper left of the center section is a flower in a frame, which is for my hobby of photography. I especially enjoy taking pictures of flowers and landscapes.
- In the center of the top row of squares, the tiger represents my interest in the big cats. I have many books about them, Greg and I have sponsored various conservations programs, and I also have a collection of nearly 200 stuffed-animal cats.
- The fabric of planets and stars in the upper right is there simple because I’m a big fan of Star Trek!
- The center left and center right depict cooking and sewing, respectively, two hobbies that I’ve enjoyed for many years.
- I’m known among my friends for feeding the rabbits that come into our yard, hence the fabric in the lower left. The rabbits do seem to prefer our shrubs and flowers to munch on, though. They are also a frequent subject of my photography.
- At the center of the bottom row is a square that represents my love of music. While undergoing chemotherapy, I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase the instrument I’ve always wanted to learn, the harp. I got a 2 1/2 – octave “pixie” harp, and I’m definitely still learning!
- In the bottom right is a golf print. Golf was something I wasn’t able to do for a couple of years due to lack of energy following surgery and chemo. But Greg and I are enjoying our first time in a golf league this year.
- In the center of it all, in addition to my faith, is the red, white and blue of the American flag. I am both proud and thankful to be an American. At the upper left of the square are the words “God Bless” – God Bless America and God Bless Us All!
